Key Takeaways
- Fallout 4 has a wealth of side missions and secret quests, giving players plenty to explore in its post-apocalyptic Boston setting.
- The game features improved combat mechanics, such as refined shooting and the ability to sprint, making it feel more modern compared to previous entries.
- Fallout 4 offers a better looting system, allowing players to easily pick up items without going through a full-screen menu, making it easier to find rare items.
While Fallout 4 is far from being the biggest game in the franchise in terms of scale, it’s certainly packed with content that makes post-apocalyptic Boston feel somehow alive. There’s a wealth of side missions and secret quests in Fallout 4 for players to explore when they’ve finished or want to take a break from the main story. Those who like collecting all kinds of game trinkets will feel right at home in this game, as it hides a lot of rare items that players can only get once, in specific shops, or through random encounters.
Bethesda released Fallout 4 in 2016, which continues to be a popular game in the developer’s catalog because of its massive open world. While some players may feel its main quest isn’t up to par with other popular titles like Fallout: New Vegas, it makes up for this deficiency with its improved features. Fallout 4’s combat feels refined, as there’s no longer a need to keep relying on VATS to hit enemies accurately. The addition of sprinting and settlement building makes the game feel more modern compared to its predecessors. The looting menu is also better, as players don’t need to go through a full-screen menu when they’re picking up items. It also makes it easier to spot these rare items in Fallout 4.

From the legendary Aeternus gatling gun to the hallowed Perfectly Preserved Pie, here are some of the rarest items in Fallout 4.
The Hardest Items to Get in Fallout 4
The rarest items in Fallout 4 aren’t always big-ticket equipment like weapons and armor. Most of them are more like souvenirs, such as bottles and clothes.
Bourbon and Rum Bottles
While soft drinks like Fallout 4's Nuka-Cola are quite common across the apocalyptic wasteland, it seems that hard drinks are more difficult to come by. Their empty bottles are especially hard to find if one doesn’t know where to look.
- Bourbon: In the Cabot House’s dining room, players can find a bottle of Bourbon on a dresser which is different from other ones in the area because it can’t be consumed. It’s an empty bottle, making it a junk item. It’s also different from the “Bourbon Bottles” scattered around Boston, as it’s only labeled as “Bourbon.”
- Rum: Bottles of this drink can only be found in limited quantities in Boston Common, The Parlor in Nuka-World, and Faneuil Hall.
Leopard Print Bandana
If there’s one item that instantly makes a character look cool, it’s the bandana. The accessory also feels right at home in Fallout 4’s post-apocalyptic Boston, where people do what they can to protect themselves from dust and polluted air. The rarest bandana one can find has a Leopard print, which can only be found in the corpses of randomly spawned enemies, civilians, or guard dogs. Some merchants may also offer this item, but the probability of this happening is also low.
Dirty Institute Lab Coats
Scientists at the Institute will usually wear lab coats, which one can find in various colors like Orange, Green, Yellow, and Blue. After finishing the Resettle Refugees radiant quest involving these characters, their coats will turn into their dirty variants. The player can then choose to kill the scientists to get their coats.
Wedding Rings
There’s nothing rarer than true love, and the player character’s Wedding Ring is the manifestation of that in Fallout 4. The player can get this at the very start of the game. They can also find it worn by their character’s spouse in Fallout 4's Vault 111. The inscription inside the rings says “Love, honor, and cherish.” If the player somehow loses their wedding band, they can find a pair of rings on two skeletons located on the roof of the Nuka-Cola bottling plant, just behind the blue dome. The Wedding Ring is the only ring that players can equip, barring Creation Club items. They can also wear this regardless of clothing or armor.
