Spade was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and began to find his niche in comedy. While at Arizona State University, David Spade regularly performed the Farce Side Comedy Hour. David dropped out of college to pursue his dream of stand up comedy. He regularly performed at Greasy Tony's Pizza in Tempe, Arizona and comedy hot spots. He also got some television parts in shows including "The Facts of Life", "Baywatch", "ALF", "Monsters", and "Born to Be Wild" and films including "Police Academy". He also befriended fellow comedian Dennis Miller.

SNL

Friend and fellow comedian Dennis Miller helped David Spade get his big break. He got David a writing job on NBC's Saturday Night Live in 1990. Eventually Spade became a cast member as well as a writer. On SNL, Spade was noted for his sarcastic one liners in skits where he played a flight attendant, a receptionist for Dick Clark and a Gap Girl. Although the early 1990's were not SNL's best rated seasons, David Spade did not go unnoticed. When most of the cast members quit the show in 1995, Spade continued on the show for another year to help transition the show into a new era. He also became good friends with fellow cast mate Chris Farley and the two would star in successful comedic movies. Spade describes his years at SNL as difficult. It was tough work and the criticism was often harsh, but the experience helped make him money, even though he was one of the lowest paid writers and actors on the show, and opened the door for new adventures. David Spade has returned to his beloved SNL as a host.

Film

While David Spade will not be exclusively remembered for his characters on Saturday Night Live, he was able to get noticed when he starred in movies toward the end of his stint at SNL. Spade formed an unlikely friendship with fellow SNL cast member Chris Farley. In 1995 the pair were tapped to star in the "buddy" movie "Tommy Boy". Spade and Farley would go on to star in the follow up film to "Tommy Boy", "Black Sheep" and its sequel. Sadly, Farley passed away due to a drug overdose in 1997. David Spade did not attend the funeral because he was too emotional. He was close to Chris Farley and hated to watch his good friend and fellow film star struggle with drug addiction. David's Spade has continued his film career. In 2001 he starred in the popular film "Joe Dirt" and later its sequel. In 2010 he starred in "Grown Ups" and later its sequel. Other films David Spade has been in throughout his career include "Jack and Jill", "Hotel Transylvania" and "The Do Over". He also appeared as himself in the documentary "I am Chris Farley".

He took the role of the sarcastic receptionist in "Just Shoot Me!" which ran from 2007 until 2003. He earned an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations for the role. Spade later earned accolades for his role as Russell Dunbar on the sitcom "Rules of Engagement" which ran from 2007 until 2013. The role earned Spade $150,000 an episode.

The following year he donated $100,000 to the ALS Bucket Challenge.
