How much horsepower is fuel line good for? ›

Most fuel line replacements cost around $300 to $500. However, fuel line replacements range anywhere from $150 to $2,000 or more, depending on your vehicle and the number/location of your broken lines. Failed fuel lines are theoretically covered by most factory bumper-to-bumper warranties.

Given a big enough pump a 3/8” steel line could support 1000 HP. The simple way to know is to install an electronic fuel pressure gauge. If the pressure falls as the engine RPM's go up you need more pump head. More pump head can be achieved with a bigger pump, higher pump voltage and/or increasing the line size.

Depending on which parts your mechanic needs to repair or replace, a fuel system service could take anywhere from an hour for a fuel line replacement to a few hours if they find a faulty fuel pump, fuel filter or carburetor issue.

2. Fuel smell — Another sign of a problem with the fuel hoses is a fuel smell coming from the car. Fuel hoses may deteriorate, leak, and wear out over time. Small leaks will result in fuel vapours being released from the car, which could produce an unpleasant stench.

In the case of fuel lines, two influences increase friction and therefore fuel pressure drop. The first is the length of the fuel line – the longer it is the more friction will be incurred. The second is flow rate – as the rate is increased so is friction.
