So let's put together the estimates we have come up with so far: 23 million shipping 'in service' containers or 38.5 million TEU. 14 million 'ex-service shipping containers or 23.3 million TEU. 6 million 'new' shipping containers or 10 Million TEU.

Currently, there are 17 million shipping containers across the globe. Of those 17 million containers, however, only six million are actually being used for transport or any other practical usage. That means approximately 11 million shipping containers are unused and are just sitting stagnant all over the place.

The freight forwarder arranges and schedules the empty container pickup. After the full container has been delivered and unloaded at is final destination, the empty container needs to be transported to a container depot again. The forwarder then follows the same procedure for its return to a depot.

The general purpose of 53 ft shipping containers(16.15 m) was introduced in the United States in 1989 and are used primarily for domestic road and rail transport in both the United States and Canada. They are classified as 53 foot high cube container due to their ISO-standard height of 9 ft 6 in (2.90 m).

The high cube dry containers are ideal for light, voluminous or bulky cargo. These extra volume containers are made in 40' and 45' sizes in steel and aluminum.
