I thought for being such a small size, it should be more discussion based. Ironically, it felt that the majority of the time I was listening to Michael lecture a class of majority women on Scandinavian Women Writers. We were blamed for not talking, but I would argue that this reveals that the discussions didn't feel like a safe space for people.

Youuu shall spend lotssss of time reaaadinggg. Take reading notes, seriously. The stories are super crazy fast paced, never boring. Micheal does take some things personally but he is very interested in the subject matter so the lectures are super fantastic and interesting. He welcomes other viewpoints but expects that you can back them up.

Class was clearly set up and expectations were given early. Lectures were meant to promote critical thinking/analysis and any texts that were difficult were usually explained further in class. Professor Stern is a great guy and a good lecturer, and I'd take more of his classes if my schedule allowed.

Michael is a good professor and I think he teaches the material well. He strives for clarity in his lessons and really encourages participation. My problem with Michael is that he can be condescending towards his students, acting personally offended and guilt tripping us (interrupting the lecture) if he THINKS (not knows) we didn't do the readings.

Michael is a kind man, who cares about his students and is accommodating to our struggles. However, his teaching style was not for me. He would often go off on tangents and long, confusing lectures that would leave me bored. That being said, his class is what you make out of it. If you want an A, pay attention, go to office hours. It will pay off.

Really appreciates if you attend lectures and stay after class to chat. Very understanding of personal issues and schedules. Gave us the option of an essay or test for the final and never forced anyone to speak up or turn their cameras on if they didn't want to. Took this class 1st term freshman year and it was a great intro to college!

Michael was by far the best prof I've had at UO, he was incredibly caring and considerate of us and our struggles through COVID adjustments. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone that likes intellectual conversations based around lectures. He cares about your participation but doesn't make the class difficult.

A very kind man, but tends to lash out at students for not participating in very verbose and intimidating discussions. Lectures are sometimes convoluted and confusing. Says attendance is not a concern of his but takes it very personally if you do not attend. Always available for office hours, and will schedule outside of them, so take advantage.

Professor Stern was one of the most intellectual and sympathetic professors I've ever had. Everything he said resonated with me and I felt totally engrossed in his lectures. His imbues both practical knowledge and intellectual experience into almost everything he says, and I loved it. Class is relatively easy. 2-page paper every week. Participate!

There was a lot of reading in this class, but most of the time it would be discussed in-depth in class so really only skimming was necessary. Michael is a great professor who cares about his students and gives great feedback on papers that's actually useful. Attendance is mandatory, but it's doable.

He is a really great guy and truly cares about his students. Although there was a 2-page paper due every week, they were film analysis papers and he is a very gracious grader on them and is very lax about due dates . I would definitely recommend him if you're interested in film or are doing a Scandinavian global context like me.

While the class was a little hard to follow sometimes with really long and difficult readings, Michael is a really great professor. He's so nice and genuinely wants to help every student succeed. His lectures can be a little difficult to follow and sometimes boring but if you're struggling he'll put in the effort to help you understand and do well

This professor is by far one of the most memorable at the UO. His influence by Nietzsche's ideas is quite apparent and he uses many references to him during his arguments. I found the class very intriguing as it did not limit you to the textbook but rather set you free to construct your own argument and refute others. Absolutely recommended!!!

Took this film class as a freshman. Never will I take a film class that's in the 300 level again. He doesn't have any midterms. His final, five essays take home, and four in class. You must know some film terminology. You're allowed a sheet of paper with notes. His discussions are long, boring unfortunately but he's a nice professor.

I took his Scandinavian Text and Interpretation class. From the first day he encouraged us to voice our opinions, but whenever I tried to do so, he would say "you are incorrect" in one way or another. DO NOT SKIP ANY OF HIS CLASSES. He takes it more personally than any other teacher and will grade your papers & blatantly treat you differently.

Michael is a challenging professor however he gets his students through. He cares about his students significantly and is willing to meet his students outside of his office hours if necessary. As for his style he loves using metaphors and leaving room for interpretation. He will give you his opinions but never refute his students views. Great Prof

He is a wonderful professor. His grading style truly made me understand the content for the tests and paper. He is extremely well spoken, and sometimes it's hard to follow his theories. However, after a few lectures I was already drawn into the material. Great class!

I took his class on the Icelandic Sagas, and absolutely loved it. We had to read six sagas over the course of ten weeks, which sounds like a lot but they are quite short and the reading level is not that difficult. Professor Stern really knows a lot about his subject, and lets his passion about it show through during his lectures. Great professor!
