Philips Remote Fetal Monitoring Solution

More than 2.2 million women in the United States live in maternity care deserts, meaning they have no hospital offering obstetric care, no birth center, and no obstetric provider within a reasonable distance1. At Philips, we are passionate about addressing maternal care disparities through innovation in obstetric care.

Via our partnership with Nuvo, Philips offers an integrated Remote Fetal Monitoring Solution to support better birthing outcomes by bringing prenatal care to the patient. This solution leverages the INVU by Nuvo platform2 and a user-friendly wearable sensor band that captures physiological data and securely transfers it into hospital electronic medical records through secure data integration via Philips IntelliBridge Enterprise (IBE).

Easing the burden on obstetrics providers

The U.S. continues to experience acute staffing shortages in medical care. Philips has the potential to ease the burden on providers by shifting a portion of care to the home setting. Providers will be able to prescribe the INVU platform to expectant mothers, who will wear the sensor band during virtual visits with their physicians. During these visits, the expectant mother views simplified data via the paired INVU mobile app, while the provider receives non-stress test readings equivalent to what OB/GYNs are accustomed to seeing during in-office procedures. Fetal trace data is automatically sent to the Electronic Medical Record for archival storage.

Keeping mothers-to-be connected to care

The Philips-Nuvo partnership addresses the challenges mothers face throughout the stages of pregnancy. The INVU platform enables remote pregnancy management so that physicians can conduct fetal non-stress tests (NST’s) remotely with patients anywhere, anytime*. The INVU platform1 has been validated for efficacy, safety, and reliable self-administration through multi-center clinical trials and human factors studies2. Now, every monitoring session gives physicians a view of the live fetal monitoring trace, no matter where their patient is*.

*The INVU platform performs best over a stable Wi-Fi connection, but the patient or clinician may also use the platform wherever cell phone service is available.

Bringing data from home into the hospital

Philips IntelliSpace Perinatal (ISP), which can be optionally part of the solution, offers surveillance and alarming with comprehensive patient documentation and data storage in one system for both flow chart-based and forms-based patient records. Philips ISP is intended to gather and display patient information from the first antepartum visit until delivery and discharge. Philips ISP can integrate with all Electronic Medical Records, making it particularly suitable to bring remote fetal monitoring data into the hospital system.

  • “The ability to conduct non-stress tests remotely is a game-changer for our patients and OB providers. High-risk pregnancies put an enormous burden on our patients who travel long distances for monitoring. This solution empowers patients in their pregnancy journey and gives them part of their life back.”

  • “As a busy mom working full time as a nurse practitioner, this platform was great because I could literally have a telemedicine visit with my own provider in the middle of my workday without having to leave the office. It was very quick and easy to use. I enjoyed the flexibility and improved access to care it gave me!”
