OBSERVER Thursday, February 11, 1993 Lincoln GOP chooses businessman Craig for county board seat By JOE MARUSAK Staff Writer LINCOLNTON Republican leaders said Wednesday they have nominated Lincolnton businessman Larry Craig to replace Jerry Payseur on the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners. Payseur has announced he plans to resign March 1 after six years on the board so he can devote more time to his family and his job as principal at S. Ray Lowder Elementary School. Republican leaders say Payseur's recommended replacement is an able businessman with plenty of experience in local politics. Craig, 4 46, of Old LincolntonCrouse Road in Lincolnton Township, is part-owner of Big A Auto Parts stores in Lincolnton and Maiden.

He was appointed by the state as the local license plate agent for the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles after the former agent, Sue Houser, pleaded guilty Dec. 4 to embezzling nearly $62,000 from the Lincolnton tag office. Craig, married and the father of two, is a Lions Club member and a 10-year veteran of Lincoln's Lifesaving Crew. He has had various offices in the county Republican organization in the past 12 years and managed the Lincoln County campaign of Sen.

Bob Dole, R- for president in 1988. The Republicans chose Craig because he "has been very active in community affairs" and proved his financial skills in running a business and in serving as Republican Party finance chairman for many years, said GOP Chairman Jim Lail. The executive committee of Lincoln's Republican Party nominated Payseur's replacement because Payseur is a Republican. Commissioners must approve the appointment, but Craig is likely to meet little or no opposition, since the board has a 4-to-1 Republican majority. Craig said Wednesday he was honored by the nomination.

He said he didn't want to discuss issues facing the county until he's actually appointed to the post and has time to familiarize himself with county government. Boy, 11, burned when mattress catches fire GASTONIA An 11-year-old boy awoke to a flaming mattress and burned legs early Wednesday after a lamp fell into his bed and ignited the sheets, authorities said. Patrick Wilhelm was in good condition at Gaston Memorial Hospital following the fire at 214 Woodleigh said Gaston County Fire Marshall Jim Pharr. The fire was confined to the bed and family members put it out before firefighters arrived, Pharr said. No one else was injured.

The fire started about 12:30 a.m., Pharr said, when a reading lamp attached to the bed's headboard fell into the bed. The light bulb's heat apparently ignited the sheets. When he awoke, Patrick ran for his mother in another room. The house was equipped with a smoke alarm, Pharr said, and it sounded when Patrick opened his bedroom door and smoke poured from the room. Gary Wireman Lincoln sheriff's son hurt in farm accident CAT SQUARE The son of Lincoln County Sheriff Joe Kiser was injured after he became caught in a piece of equipment that was transferring grain from a storage bin to a truck on his farm along State Route 1002, authorities said.

Stan Kiser, 37, was treated at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory and released after suffering cuts on various parts of his body Wednesday morning, authorities said. Kiser became caught in the Odyssey East Gaston audience is critical of project Continued from page the program, and Gaston is supposed to get $20 million. In the program, students would learn in nontraditional environments and would advance toward graduation not by age or grade, but by performance levels. Students also would be required to do such things as perform community service before they could graduate. The sites under consideration for Odyssey are the South Point, East Gaston and North Gaston high school districts, and officials will make their final presentation at North Gaston tonight.

The school board will make a final decision on Monday, based on what the Odyssey team recommends. Paige Cassidy, a NASDC spokes- SOUTH CAROLINA DEATHS LANCASTER Mr. Albert Thomas Bailey, 62, retired Albert Bailey Builders owner, died Feb. 9, 1993, at home. Funeral is 2 p.m.
