The best foundations for mature skin deliver a boost of much-needed hydration—and blur the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines for a flawless, youthful complexion.
Meet the Experts: Brendan Camp, M.D., a double board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York City; Marisa Garshick, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York City; Emily Gray, celebrity makeup artist; Randall Intrabartola, certified esthetician and makeup artist; Jamie Greenberg, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Blighlighter and Bloss.
“Mature skin tends to be more dry as a result of reduced sebum and ceramides in the skin, which function to seal in moisture,” explains Brendan Camp, M.D., a double board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York City. So, when shopping for a foundation for mature skin you'll want to opt for foundations with hydrating ingredients—like hyaluronic acid and ceramides. Camp also recommends scanning the formulas for active ingredients commonly found in anti-aging serums—like vitamin C, which are effective at not only smoothing the skin, but keeping it healthy too.
Ahead, find the best foundations that dermatologists and makeup artists recommend for mature skin—as well as expert tips on what to specifically look for when shopping.

How to choose the best foundation for mature skin
✔️Go for hydration. All of the experts agree that it’s best to opt for hydrating formulas. Why? Mature skin tends to be more dry as a result of reduced sebum production, explains Dr. Camp—meaning it can benefit from ingredients that hydrate and moisturize skin, such as hyaluronic acids, ceramides, squalane, and triglycerides.
✔️Choose a lightweight, dewy formula. “The best type of formulation for mature skin is lightweight, so it won’t sink into any creases, wrinkles, or fine lines,” says Gray. “Mature skin is thin as well, so the more lightweight the formulation, the more comfortable on the skin.” Additionally, opt for foundations with a dewy finish rather than matte, which can “help restore some moisture to the skin and help it appear plumper and more youthful,” explains Dr. Camp.
✔️Look for sun protection. “While using sunscreen is an essential part of any skincare routine, if a foundation has sunscreen in it, it can provide an added bonus,” Dr. Garshick notes. If you’re out and about, and the sun is shining, you need SPF—no matter your age or skin type.
✔️Consider your skin type. You’ll also want to look for formulas that suit your specific skin type. If you’re struggling with dull skin, for example, you may want to look for a brightening formula and/or a formula with vitamin C. For oily skin, oil-free formulas that blur imperfections work well. And those with dry skin and/or prominent fine lines should search for ultra-hydrating and dewy foundations.
What foundation will not settle in wrinkles?
“The type of foundation that is best for not settling into wrinkles is going to be more lightweight and thin,” says Gray. So, you should ideally look for formulas with a light, weightless texture that seamlessly absorbs into your skin.
Another way to help prevent foundation from creasing into your wrinkles and fine lines is to prep your skin with hydrating products before applying the foundation—like a good face primer for mature skin, which can help “create a barrier between any wrinkles and the foundation,” says Gray.
“Skin prep and setting your makeup is the best way to prevent the foundation from settling into lines and wrinkles,” adds Intrabartola. “Start with a good hydrating moisturizer... then finish your makeup by using a finely milled setting powder only on the areas where you are concerned with creasing.”

Should mature skin use matte or dewy foundation?
According to our experts, a foundation with a dewy finish is typically more ideal for mature skin. “Mature skin tends to be more dry as a result of reduced sebum production,” explains Dr. Camp. “Dewy foundation products may restore some moisture to the skin and help it appear plumper and more youthful.” Greenberg also recommends “something with a glowy or dewy finish” as “many people with mature skin struggle with dullness,” she says.
Matte finish formulations are typically not recommended for mature skin, as they can “look cakey on the skin and will accentuate texture, lines and wrinkles,” notes Intrabartola. However, if you do have oily skin or acne-prone skin, you may opt for a foundation with a matte finish which can help “reduce shine and help absorb excess oil,” says Dr. Camp.
How we chose the best foundation for mature skin
We consulted Brendan Camp, M.D. and Marisa Garshick, M.D., double board-certified dermatologists at MDCS Dermatology in New York City; Emily Gray, celebrity makeup artist; Randall Intrabartola, certified esthetician and makeup artist; and Jamie Greenberg, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Blighlighter and Bloss. We also sifted through countless customer reviews, and conducted our own research to find the best foundations for mature skin available.
